Sitting, standing, running, walking, biking, climbing –guess which joint takes the worst beating? That’s right, the knees.
Knees are very important to our daily living activities, and yet they are one of the most un-thought about and unprotected joints in the body. Having strong leg muscles is important for healthy knees, but for many of us, they are just not in good enough shape. Physical activities can actually wear knees down – and the injury may not show up for many years. Let’s do a quick check on your knees.
·Look in the mirror at your knees. Do the kneecaps “point” outward to the same degree on both legs?
· Have your feet flattened over the years · If you do a deep knee bend and stand up, do you hear cracking and popping? · Do your shoes wear out on one side earlier than the other? · When you walk, does one foot turn outward more than the other? · Do you have an ache across your lower back after you walk for a short while? · Do your knees ever feel hot, or look red and inflamed?
A “yes” to any of these questions may indicate a problem. Management for non-surgical troubles usually includes exercises to stabilize the knee, heat or cryotherapy, orthotics or inserts to correct poor foot arch support, gentle manipulation if it is indicated, and a reasonable exercise program that minimizes the stress to your knees.
