Massage and a Stuffy Nose?

Why do we get stuffy noses when we are getting a massage.

During a massage you spend a long period of time face down with your face pointed directly on the ground. Which doesn't usually happen in your natural life. At the same time, your body is level with your head and the floor.

This creates an excellent condition for your blood to flow and pool in your nasal Mucosa, ( The nasal mucosa lines the nasal cavity. It is part of the respiratory mucosa, the mucous membrane lining the respiratory tract.) That's what we think of congestion. This nasal cavity is lined with erectile tissue just like a couple of other parts of your body. This tissue expands and engorges as the veins fill with as they vasodilate. You probably notice the same thing happening when you have a cold. But if you notice right now your nostrils take turns open and closing. It's a perfectly natural rhythm of the body.

So it is not the face cradle that is the problem, but it makes the issue more clear and uncomfortable. Some clients have it more than others. It just depends on your anatomy and the status of your situation and hydration.

Some simple bits of help are Vicks Vapo rub or essential oils. I use a nasal spray about 20 minutes before I get a massage. This keeps my mouth drying out because I can't breathe through my nose.

You can turn your head to the side.

Now, why do some people have runny noses? or Both?

That's another topic for another day!
